Rosella Nisio The Silent Ray

One, two, three…

The Silent Ray is a two-channel video installation by Italian artist Rossella Nisio that plunges into the depths of darkness—a darkness that speaks of absence. This darkness consumes the object and objectivity, distorting their roles as entities of existence. Nisio delves into the memories and narrative truths embedded in photographs, inviting us to experience the sensations of seeing, hearing, feeling, and even smelling in the void. In The Silent Ray, both darkness and light teeter on fragility, each capable of overwhelming the other. We remain confined inside, never glimpsing the outside, despite the presence of doors and windows that remain shut.

One, two …

The Silent Ray is a descent into the destructive desire to break free from mediocrity, rooted in Rossella’s research into her family’s history. The work draws from photographic materials in an album created by her grandfather, a volunteer in the fascist military during the 1935–36 conflict in Ethiopia. It also incorporates archival documents, writings, and records from those who fought in, narrated, or studied the war.
